Blog 68 – Old Man River – Saturday June 17 – Las Vegas

“That was a heckuva show, that “A-Team”. You know George
Peppard, he made that show. I mean Mr. T was great and everything, but if not
for George Peppard that show woulda been nothing”

This from the poker pro sitting beside me at The World
Series Of Poker Seniors tournament I am currently playing in. This was said
with absolutely no sense of irony or parody. This was simply one man’s opinion.
Or several really, because heads around the table nodded in solemn remembrance
of the dead actor George Peppard and worse yet, his dead show “The A-Team”.
There seemed no point in saying “Hey, have you guys seen the last season of “Orange
Is The New Black!”

Anyway I say I am “currently” playing in the tourney because
while I am writing this at 5:30 AM from my comfortable bed in the poncy Four Seasons
Hotel, I should be sleeping in preparation for today. I made day 2.
We started
yesterday with a whopping 5,348 players, a new record for the Senior’s event.
We played 13 hours yesterday to get it down to 740 people, and I am one of
them. The top 809 get paid so I’m already in the money. Unfortunately I am very
short-stacked with 11,300 chips left, just under ten big blinds. That means I’ll
have to work fast when we start again at 11:00 this morning.

I should be sleeping. But Randy Lebow is sleeping in the bed
beside me so that’s not going to happen. Did I mention in my last blog that Randy
snores a little bit. It’s really not at all like Randy is having trouble
breathing. It’s like Satan is having trouble breathing. Honestly, the sounds
coming out of that man are truly otherworldly.

So while the bed is indeed comfortable, that’s like
commenting on the quality of the salt during the Irish potato famine.

I pull the sheets, the duvet, and the three enormous pillows
over my head to try to abate the sonic vibrations, but to no avail. It’s like
trying to stem the flow of a mighty river with a few sheets of “Bounty” (while
suffocating yourself)

Anyway day 2 starts at 11:00 AM today. If I bust
out early ,and given my paltry chip stack, that seems entirely plausible, I
will head over to The Wynn where they have a great $1100 tourney starting.
