Blog Number Fifty-Nine – Straight Outta Commerce – Part Three

Saturday Feb. 20

Mornings don’t get better than this. Well, except for the
very mediocre muffin I was forced to eat. I really need to start bringing my
muffins with me on these trips. But other than that it’s a glorious morning. I work out,
read my book by the pool, beautiful sunshine,  close a deal, get a massage (same woman as
last year, Aracile, bless her magical hands), I mean what’s not to like?

I sit down at 1:00 PM. The tournament is going well. I gotta
say, I love the way I am playing these days. My advantage is they think they
have me sized up (“they” being every pro in the house – which seemingly is
everyone but me, the way these people talk, there are seemingly no amateurs or
tourists at Commerce). I’m not one of “them”, so they figure I’m as nitty as they
get, and therefore so predictable. And I’m really happy to let them think that
way. Until it’s too late… for “them”.

365 people start and 36 will advance to the final day 2. By
11:00 PM or so, I’ve built up a really good stack and with less than 100 players
left, I’m probably top ten in chips. Two brutal beats later (QQ to 55 – he hits
a five on the river – and AQs to AJ – she completes a straight with an inside K
on the turn) I’m out in 90th.  Too bad, but I played well, and spent all day, and made lifelong
friends, with some Persian guy whose name I never caught.

James Woods is still hangin’ around like a lingering cough. He played in this event but got bounced early.
